Description des tâches

The successful candidate will investigate the oxidation of manganese (II) by Fenton-produced reactive intermediates. This process has far-reaching implications for the coupled environmental chemistry of critical redox-active elements, including iron, manganese and arsenic and may drive significant advances in water treatment technologies. This project involves chemical and spectroscopic measurments alongside kinetic modeling to :
1) identify the chemical controls and mechanism of Mn(II) oxidation by Fenton-produced oxidants;
2) quantify the competition between Mn(II) and targeted redox active species for reactive oxidants;
3) investigate whether the amendment of Mn(II) in Fenton-type systems can catalyze the transformation of contaminants that are otherwise unreactive in Fenton-type systems. This project will involve collaboration with Dr. Case van Genuchten (Utrecht University) and Dr. Urs von Gunten (Eawag/EPFL)

The person will be engaged on the salary scale of the activities of Fonds Narional Suisse. As of 2016, the scale is 47'040 (year 1), 48'540 (year 2) and 50'040 (year 3). The additional contract is supplementary to these amounts.

Profil souhaité

Master's degree in chemistry, environmental engineering, environmental science, geoscience or related discipline.
A strong backround in chemistry, ideally in relation to aquatic and/or soil ecosystems. Knowledge of analytical chemistry, spectroscopy and mineralogy in an asset.
Excellent command of written and spoken English. Working knowledge of French is not necessary but the successful candidate can acquire basic skills in French through appropriate courses.
Interest in developing a molecular-scale understanding of environmental redox processes and developing kinetic models to understand contaminant fate.
Commitment to conduct a PhD thesis based on experimental approaches, including spectroscopic measurements and kinetic modeling.
